Cleaner CV in Norway: short, concrete, with the paperwork in order

Cleaning is one of the most common routes into Norwegian working life for newcomers, and one of the most tightly regulated industries in the country. That regulation works in your favour: knowing how the sector is governed lets you tell a serious employer from a dubious one — and shows in your CV that you know the trade.

A cleaning CV should be short. One page. What decides it is which types of building you have cleaned, which hours you can work, and whether you can work independently without a supervisor standing over you.

Approval and the HMS card

Cleaning companies in Norway must be approved by the Labour Inspection Authority (Arbeidstilsynet), and employees performing cleaning work must carry an HMS card visibly at work. The card is the employer's responsibility, not yours — you do not need one before applying. But two things are worth knowing: you can ask about it at the interview, and you can check the Labour Inspection Authority's register of approved cleaning companies to see whether an employer is listed.

If you already hold an HMS card from a previous Norwegian employer, mention it. It signals that you have worked in the sector on proper terms.

Building type is competence

Write what you have cleaned, not just that you have cleaned. Offices, schools, kindergartens, nursing homes, hotels, shops, stairwells, post-construction cleaning — these are different jobs with different demands. Nursing homes and kindergartens involve infection control, construction cleaning is heavy and deadline-driven, hotels are measured in rooms per hour. The employer is looking for the experience that resembles the contract she needs to staff.

Hours decide a lot

Much cleaning happens early morning or late evening, often in part-time roles assembled from several contracts. Write the hours you can genuinely work and whether you have a driving licence or can reach sites by public transport early in the morning. This practical detail often decides who gets called first.

Pay and the extended collective agreement

Median monthly salary for "Renholdere i bedrifter" (cleaners in businesses) is NOK 41,180, with the middle half between 38,480 and 44,530 (Statistics Norway, table 11418, 2025). The cleaning sector also has an extended (*allmenngjort*) collective agreement, meaning there is a statutory minimum wage — the rates are published by Arbeidstilsynet, and they are worth knowing before you sign anything.

Common mistakes

"Cleaning" as the only description. Name the buildings, the machines, the area.
No hours. Without availability the employer cannot fit you into a route.
A long CV. One page. Two pages makes nobody stronger in this trade.
No reference. One previous supervisor or client with a phone number carries real weight.
Everything in English. Simple Norwegian beats perfect English when the ad is Norwegian.

Do I need experience to get a cleaning job? Not always. Many companies train newcomers, and then availability, punctuality and references weigh most.

What if I do not speak Norwegian yet? Many cleaning roles go to people with limited Norwegian, but it limits which contracts you can take — especially where you meet clients or residents. State your level honestly.
